Frequently Asked Questions

About Rover Trophy

1.  What is Rover Trophy?

Rover Trophy is a premium custom Land Rover Defender builder based in Connecticut. We design, build, and deliver bespoke classic Defenders — fully restored and re-engineered to a standard that combines the originality of the original vehicle with modern performance, luxury, and long-term reliability. Every Rover Trophy build is a one-of-one commission, built by hand in the United States.

2.  Where are Rover Trophy vehicles built?

Every Rover Trophy Defender is built entirely in the United States, at our facility in Connecticut. We do not import completed or near-completed vehicles from overseas. Our builds are conceived, fabricated, painted, trimmed, and finished right here — which means tighter quality control, faster communication during the build, and a vehicle backed by a full US-based warranty and service network.

3.  Is Rover Trophy affiliated with Land Rover or Jaguar Land Rover?

No. Rover Trophy is an independent, privately owned builder. We are not sponsored, affiliated with, or endorsed by Jaguar Land Rover Limited. Land Rover® and Defender® are registered trademarks of Jaguar Land Rover Limited. We source authentic vintage Defender donor vehicles and re-engineer them under our own methods and standards.

THE BUILD

4.  What is the Rover Trophy build process?

Every Rover Trophy begins with an authenticated donor chassis — sourced and inspected by our team. The vehicle is then stripped to the ground.  At that point we will either replace the chassis with a brand new chassis – powder coated for rust protection, or you have the option of upgrading to our purpose built chassis with and independent front suspension and 4 link rear.  In either case the body that we use (which will also be new parts) will bolt on to the chassis just as the original did.

The truck is then rebuilt from the ground up across a comprehensive multi-stage process covering restoration, drivetrain integration, paint, interior fabrication, upholstery, electronics, and final quality review. No shortcuts. No outsourced assembly. Your build is managed by our team, start to finish, in Connecticut..

5.  How long does a Rover Trophy build take?

Our standard build timeline is approximately 18 months from commission confirmation to delivery. This reflects the depth and care of a true ground-up restoration — not a surface refresh. Build slots are limited and fill on a first-confirmed basis.

6.  How many Defenders does Rover Trophy build per year?

We intentionally limit our annual production to ensure every vehicle receives the personal attention it deserves. This is not a production line — it is a craft workshop. Limiting volume is how we protect quality and maintain the exclusivity that makes each Rover Trophy a genuine collector's piece.  Currently we are trying to keep our new builds a year under ten so we can make sure each vehicle gets the attention it deserves.

7.  Can I customize my Rover Trophy Defender?

Yes — customization is the point. Rover Trophy does not offer off-the-shelf builds. Every commission begins with a detailed design consultation where we work through your vision: body style, exterior color, interior materials, drivetrain preference, technology integration, and any special requests. We can match virtually any paint color and work with a curated selection of premium leathers, fabrics, and trim materials.

8.  What body styles and wheelbases does Rover Trophy offer?

Rover Trophy generally builds on the classic Defender 90 (2-door short wheelbase) and Defender 110 (4-door long wheelbase) platforms. The D90 is a driver's vehicle — tight, iconic, and visually striking. The D110 is the family and touring platform — more interior space, four doors, and seating for more passengers.  We have also built the iconic 130 as a stretched body 140.  However that is a specialized build which would need to be discussed.

ENGINES & PERFORMANCE

9.  What engine options are available in a Rover Trophy Defender?

Our builds are generally based on a GM LT1 V8 engine with 10 speed GM Transmission.  We also build electric vehicles if a customer would like to discuss.

10.  Can I daily drive a Rover Trophy Defender?

Absolutely. Rover Trophy builds are engineered to be driven, not stored. Our suspension, steering, and drivetrain upgrades are calibrated for real-world use — highway comfort, city maneuverability, and genuine off-road capability when you want it. Air conditioning is standard. Modern infotainment and connectivity are available. Fuel economy, handling feel, and long-term reliability are design objectives,

PRICING & PAYMENT

11.  What does a Rover Trophy Defender cost?

Our builds are priced depending on platform and specification and posted on our website. The price includes the authenticated donor vehicle, full frame-off restoration, drivetrain, interior, paint, US-based warranty, and white-glove delivery. There are no hidden add-ons for items that should be standard at this level.  Given how quickly parts cost and the supply chain is moving we suggest you track our website for pricing as there will be regular pricing updates.

12.  What is the payment schedule for a Rover Trophy commission?

We use a milestone-based payment schedule tied to build progress. An initial deposit secures your build slot and launches the design consultation. Subsequent payments are structured around confirmed production milestones so you are never paying far ahead of progress.

13.  Do you offer financing?

We have found that finance companies will offer financing options but only upon completion of the vehicle.  So it is likely that if you would like to finance you would need to bridge until completion and then refi into a loan. Please contact us to discuss financing options.

WARRANTY & SERVICE

14.  What warranty does Rover Trophy provide?

Every Rover Trophy Defender is delivered with a comprehensive warranty backed by our Connecticut facility. Because we build every vehicle ourselves — in the United States — we know every bolt, weld, and wire in your truck. If something needs attention under warranty, it comes back to the people who built it, not a third-party service network that has never seen the vehicle before. This is a material difference from builders who ship completed vehicles from overseas and rely on independent shops for US warranty work.

15.  Who performs warranty and post-warranty service on my Rover Trophy?

Generally we do. Rover Trophy performs all warranty work at our Connecticut facility. We also maintain detailed build records for every vehicle — which means any future service, whether performed by us or an approved specialist, benefits from knowing exactly what was built, how, and with what components. You will never have a service technician guessing at what's in your truck.

If you upgrade to the Rover Trophy chassis we have endeavored to ensure that most of the parts and drivetrain are Chevrolet performance parts that are readily available from any Chevrolet Dealership.  Much of this can therefore be worked on by regular mechanics.  This may not seem like a lot – but it is.  You are now dealing with more OEM parts and fast supply chain lead times.  That means your truck can be kept on the road for cheaper and much quicker.

16.  Can Rover Trophy service Defenders that were not built by Rover Trophy?

Rover Trophy's team has deep expertise in classic Land Rover Defenders across all configurations. Contact us to discuss your vehicle and current availability.

RESALE VALUE

17.  Do Rover Trophy Defenders hold their value?

Classic Land Rover Defenders have demonstrated consistent appreciation across the collector market — auction records for premium restomods now regularly reach $300,000–$400,000+. A Rover Trophy build is positioned at the upper end of this market. Documented provenance, full build records, and US-legal title are the foundation of resale value in this segment.

When resales have been commissioned through Rover trophy using our branding and sales process we have found extremely high resale to original price correlation.

18.  What happens when I want to sell my Rover Trophy Defender?

Rover Trophy offers a preferred resale program for clients who wish to sell their vehicle. When sold through Rover Trophy, you benefit from our buyer network, our marketing infrastructure, and our position as the original builder — which commands a meaningful premium over private-party or third-party resale. We maintain full build documentation for every vehicle, which is the most important factor in achieving top-tier resale prices in the collector Defender market. No other builder can offer the same level of continuity between the original build and the resale transaction.

19.  Why does reselling through Rover Trophy achieve better prices than selling privately?

Three reasons. First, provenance: buyers pay a premium for vehicles sold directly by the original builder — the build story, documentation, and builder relationship are fully intact and verifiable. Second, access: Rover Trophy maintains a curated list of qualified buyers actively seeking builds in this category, meaning your vehicle is presented to the right audience from day one. Third, presentation: we know how to photograph, price, and position a Rover Trophy build for maximum impact across our marketing channels — including direct client network, social media, and enthusiast platforms.

IMPORT, LEGAL & REGISTRATION

20.  Are Rover Trophy Defenders street legal in the United States?

Yes. Rover Trophy sources donor vehicles that are at least 25 years old, qualifying them under the federal 25-Year Rule for importation. Once titled in the US, they are registered and insured like any other vehicle — no special permits or restrictions for most states. California buyers have additional CARB compliance requirements which we can advise on. Contact us for state-specific registration guidance.

21.  How do I insure a Rover Trophy Defender?

Rover Trophy Defenders can be insured as collector vehicles through specialists such as Hagerty or Grundy, or as standard used vehicles through major carriers. Collector vehicle policies typically offer agreed-value coverage — meaning you and the insurer agree on the vehicle's value upfront, which is essential for a bespoke build at this price point. We recommend discussing coverage with a specialist who understands the classic vehicle market.

THE BUYING EXPERIENCE

22.  How do I start a Rover Trophy commission?

The process begins with a conversation. Reach out through our website or contact us directly — we'll schedule a design consultation to discuss your vision, intended use, timeline, and budget. From there, we develop a build proposal and, once agreed, secure your slot with an initial deposit. There is no obligation prior to that conversation.

23.  Can I visit the Rover Trophy facility?

Yes, and we encourage it. Seeing the workshop, meeting the team, and understanding the depth of the build process is the best way to appreciate what goes into a Rover Trophy. Visits are by appointment.

24.  Can I see examples of completed Rover Trophy builds?

Yes. Our portfolio of completed builds is available on our website and social media. Each build is documented with professional photography and a build story. For serious buyers, we can arrange in-person viewings of available vehicles.

25.  Do you have vehicles available for immediate purchase?

From time to time, Rover Trophy has completed builds available for immediate delivery — either vehicles built on spec or client commissions that have become available. Contact us or check our current inventory for what's available today. If nothing currently matches your vision, a custom commission with an 18-month build timeline is the right path.

ROVER TROPHY VS. THE MARKET

26.  How is Rover Trophy different from other custom Defender builders?

Three things set Rover Trophy apart. First, we build in America — every vehicle is designed, fabricated, and finished at our Connecticut facility, not shipped in from overseas. This means tighter quality control, faster communication, and a warranty backed by the people who built your truck. Second, we offer a dedicated resale program — when it's time to sell, Rover Trophy handles it, and our builds consistently achieve better resale outcomes than private-party or third-party transactions. Third, we are a boutique operation — our production is intentionally limited, which means you deal directly with the people making decisions about your vehicle.

27.  Why choose a US-built Defender over one imported from the UK?

When your Defender is built in the United States, the advantages compound over time. Parts and service are sourced domestically. Warranty claims are handled without international logistics. Compliance with US title, registration, and emissions requirements is built in from day one. And if you ever want to sell, a US-built vehicle with a clean domestic title and documented American provenance commands a premium in the resale market. Buyers know what they're getting. That certainty has real value.

28.  I've seen Defender builders at much lower price points. What am I paying for with Rover Trophy?

The Defender restomod market runs from surface-level refreshes to documented ground-up masterworks. The gap between them is not cosmetic — it is structural. A chassis that was never properly treated will rust from the inside out within a decade. A 30-year-old wiring loom taped and spliced rather than replaced will develop faults. A drivetrain swap done without proper engineering will wear through components prematurely. At Rover Trophy, the price reflects a build that was done right the first time — because we're the ones who have to fix it under warranty if it wasn't.
